The Truce--A Flashback

Post by Admin on Fri Jul 13, 2018 10:39 pm

Later that night Kylie lay in bed with Andrew. He was asleep and had his arms wrapped protectively around her. She closed her eyes and breathed in his scent, letting it comfort her. She still couldn't believe how far they had come together compared to where they started out...

Kylie had been on the street since she was 13, but even before that she had spent more time on the streets than she had at home. The streets were safer in many ways. At home she suffered at the hand of her father. Her father was a drunk who had abused her mother until she had finally had the guts to walk out on him...unfortunately she had left Kylie there to fend for herself. Kylie was abused emotionally, physically, and sexually by her father. He delighted in torturing her. Her tears egged him on and so early on she learned not to allow herself to cry in front of him...no matter what he did to her. Her powers came as a result of his abuse in one explosive surge of energy one night as he came at her with a knife. She had not stayed to see if he was dead or alive...she had simply fled in terror.

She learned how to somewhat control her powers on her own through practice. She kept her powers to herself as she learned how to survive on the streets. At first it was tough, but it slowly became easier. She learned to steal and pickpocket, but simple pride kept her from ever begging for money. She was street smart and quickly earned a name for herself and carved out her own niche. However, one day a boy decided to test her and attempted to ease himself into her territory...that boy was Andrew. That started an all out territory war between them, which became ultimately worse when they discovered each other's abilities. They were nearly equally matched in fighting, which frustrated them, but also made them respectfully of the other. They each were doing what they needed in order to survive. What they did not realize yet, was that they needed to be working together.

One spring evening Kylie was heading back to the abandoned building she was using as her home when a violent thunderstorm developed quickly overhead. While Kylie could handle almost anything, thunderstorms reduced her to that of a six year old child. She had been terrified of them ever since her father locked her out of the house one night during a thunderstorm as punishment for dropping a glass. She had been six years old at the time. She cowered in an alleyway with her arms wrapped around her legs, rocking and crying as she felt entirely alone in the world. At the time she didn't realize that everything was about to change...

As far back as he could remember Andrew could only remembering being on the streets. His earliest and fondest memories were with Mason who helped raise him. Mason recognized that Andrew could hold onto grudges and would spend a great deal of time instructing morality and values despite their hard life. However he woudlnt push an issue with him for fear of Andrew up and leaving. A young boy had no business being on the streets all alone in his opinion.

Mason had found the young boy at a bus stop shivering and malnourished from the rain. Soon afterward he discovered that he was a mutant. Taking him under his wing Mason brought him to an abanoned subway station, crafted in late 1905, it was left behind as new tunnels were dug out that were more efficient. Mason had found it years prior and spent a great deal of time cleaning it up turning several cars into a more lived in space. It was dry during the rain season and there were vents leading up to the surface allowing a fire to be made. Over the years he helped make a training ring for Andrew to better learn how to use his powers.

It was dry, quite and over the years it became a home for Andrew. He did his best to not to argue with Mason slowly seeing him as a father figure he needed. He learned how to survive on the streets, how to fight and when. For Andrew, the hard life on the street was eased somewhat when he had Mason.

That all changed one evening when Mason wouldn't wake up. Andrew hadn't notice that hte old man was getting older and slower and he was venturing out for food more often on his own. Coming back late one evening as quiet as he could as Mason tended to take more naps he found him on a sofa in one of the trains. Once the shock dissipated Andrew had respectfully carried Mason's body up to the surface to watch the sunrise before paramedics came. He hid and watched them pick up his body knowing that if they saw Andrew they would try and grab him as well.

Andrew, feeling lost and truly alone in the world, returned to the subways and remained there for weeks on end. Gangs were always a problem of course but for osme reason they began to encroach on the subway. Having lost Mason Andrew refused to let anyone else tarnish his memory and took all his frustration and anger out on them. Within weeks he carved an area out from the Grey with devastation and power outages to a point where the media was beginning to pick up on it. Thinking it was some new vigilante hero gangs were beginning to leave unaware it was just a young teen causing the damage.

Finding a small purpose from fighting Andrew began to spread out from the grey and into neighboring areas. It was easy picking someones pockets if they were knocked out after all. He was doing fairly well for himself until he ran into Kylie. Dismissing her immediately because she was a girl he assumed he would just steam roll her and take what she had built. But she proved him wrong and their rivalry almost came to end immediately if a fire hydrant had burst giving him an edge with his electricity.

Like Kylie he didnt see her as anything more than just a rival in this game. He swore he'd never underestimate her again as he had to leave her territory his tail between his legs. They would engage in one another from time to time but finding they were mutants they knew they had to keep a low profile. They were both well underage and should be in the foster care system, but being mutants their chances of adoption were low. Andrew had heard about the Xavier institute years prior but didnt want to be separated from Mason. And seeing as far as he'd gotten on his own he didnt feel the need to reach out.

He'd never admit to anyone that he was terrified of leaving the subway. The guilt that he coudln't do more for his 'father' would forever gnaw at him.

That evening he had found a drug dealer working on a corner on the border of his and Kylie's territory. After a quick scuffle he managed to grab up the man's wallet but was unable to ask who his supplier. Leaving the man behind he thought a celebratory slice of pizza was in order. He was walking on the sidewalk with his hood up as the rain began to fall. a smile spread as he heard the distant thunder. He loved thunderstorms, it was his favorite weather. He would often strip down somewhere private and just let the water cascade on him. He swore he could just feel the electricity buzzing along his skin. Thinking a bigger meal was in order as his mood was vastly improved because of hte feeling he nearly tripped over a upturned garbage can. He stopped in his tracks hearing someone crying.

Now he wasn't stupid, going down an alleyway alone in the dark was just asking to be jumped, so he stayed where he stood. hearing the crying still he called, "Who's down there?" He asked his eyes sparking.

Kylie kept trying to work up the courage to get up and leave the alleyway. She knew it wasn’t safe there, but she just couldn’t get herself to move. She was rendered helpless by the storm and she felt entirely alone. That feeling caused her tears to fall even harder. She hated her mother for leaving her and she hated her father for what he had done to her. But what she hated the most was that even though she had gotten away from him he was still causing her pain.

Suddenly, she heard someone stop at the opening of the alleyway. Normally, she would be preparing herself for a fight, but she couldn’t even stand, let alone fight. She was a sitting duck. She tried to quiet herself, hoping whoever it was would just leave. However, that didn’t happen. Instead, she heard the unmistakable sound of Andrew’s voice. She had spent so much time showing him she wasn’t someone to be messed around with, but now he would see her in a completely vulnerable state and that would entirely change. She didn’t respond, but a sudden flash of lightening lit up the alleyway enough for Andrew to see her. She sat huddled in a corner with her legs pulled up tightly against her body and her arms wrapped around them. She was visibly trembling and tears continued to stream down her cheeks.

“Go away”, she finally managed to say, though her voice shook.

Andrew heard the voice and thought it sounded like Kylie but off. The alleyway lit up and he spotted her shivering and sniffling. He raised an eyebrow finding this was a bit of a twist. At first he thought this was some sort of ruse of hers. But after thinking it over it seemed like a tactic beneath her. She could fight as well as anyone else and how she was shaking it seemed she was really upset.

"Are you afraid of thunder and lightning?" He asked as another thunder struck. He placed his hands in his pockets being rather serious. He still didnt trust her and was ready if she started to gather energy.

Kylie hated every moment of this. Looking weak in front of Andrew just added insult to injury. She wanted to say something snarky, but her mind blanked as another bolt of lightening lit up the sky, followed by the loud boom of the thunder. The storm was very close and the rain began to fall harder, soaking her clothes and causing her blonde hair to stick to her face and neck. In a moment of absolute vulnerability she just nodded.

Andrew looked up seeing the curtain of water wash over them. he breathed in as the euphoria hit his face. But looking back at Kylie it seemed like she was in hell. When she nodded that she was afraid he felt pity for her. He thought of just helping her along then, just enough so she could get back to hwatever place she slept in. but he doubted she would let him anywhere near her base. he thought of his own home and wasn't sure he wanted her to know where it was either. But he knew one of hte tunnels he would take was nearby and it would shield her from the rain at least. And he was confident she wouldn't be able to backtrack the paths they would walk.

"Come on, i know a place where we can go to get you out of this." Andrew offered. He even halfheartedly held out his hand for her to take.

Kylie did not want Andrew's pity...nor anyone else's for that matter. But she could not deny that she needed help and despite it all she trusted Andrew more than she did anyone else on the street. They were similar in many ways and there was an underlying respect between them. And so when he offered to take her to a dry, safe place she hesitated only for a moment before slowly accepting his hand. Her accepting his hand might surprise Andrew. It was a gesture anyone else would take for granted, but for them it was a big deal. She shakily got to her feet and allowed him to lead her to the place he had mentioned. She made no move to attack him and anyone looking at them together might have thought they were friends or even a couple.

Andrew's body was tense as he waited for Kylie to take his hand. There was still a chance she could lash out and go after him in his thoughts. When she reached out to take his hand he kept his other hand balled up in his pocket just to be safe. Helping her up was a bit of a thing, just last week they were at each others throats trying to gain the advantage over the other.

Seeing how it was raining he didnt cause her any grief and led her along the way. He made stops each time there was a thunderclap giving her time to recover before they found a way down into the subway tunnels. Andrew had to pick a lock to move aside the gates keeping people out but he locked them back up. It seemed he knew his way around. He reached into his pack and pulled out a flashlight.

"Just stay close and try not to touch the rails. I dont pay much attention if their live or not." Andrew warned her. Andrew kept an eye out for kylie to make sure she was keeping up alright and after a while of unncessary turns they came out from the long dark tunnel and came across a more well lit area. The walls were rather beautiful and it was obvious that back in the day when this part of the city was the center of commerce this station was quite the sight to behold.

Turning off the flashlight Andrew walked over to a nearby power box and flicked a few switches turning on the rest of the lights. "It's not much but it's home." Andrew said looking back over to Kylie. "I'll get you a towel, try not to touch anything." he said. The cars were in pretty good condition and it was obvious someone had restored a great deal of them. The interios were well lived in with lots of blankets and pillows. Andrew stepped aboard one of hte trains and looked at one of hte cars that was closed off. We have a guest Mason and i haven't said anything crass yet youd be proud he thought grabbing up a towel for Kylie.

He stepped back out and hit his fist against a radio turning it on filling the subway with some soft music. "here." Andrew offered holding hte towel out for Kylie. "i'd offer you something to eat but i was planning on grabbing something on the way home when well..foudn you." Andrew said.

Kylie didn't know where Andrew was leading her. She was too busy focusing on the thunder and lightening to pay attention. He continued to hold onto her hand and that provided her strangely with a level of comfort that she wasn't used to. She was trusting him...and he was trusting her. This was unfamiliar territory for them, but she knew she could trust him. He was patient with her and stopped when she needed to. After a time they headed down into what appeared to be an old subway tunnel. He led her through many twists and turns and she felt rather disoriented, but he could probably walk it in his sleep.

Finally, the tunnels opened up to an abandoned subway station. The walls were beautifully decorated in old tile with a mural in the center of the wall. There were several old subway cars and she slowly began to realize that he had led her to his home. The fact that he had done this for her nearly overwhelmed her. He could have just dropped her off at a shelter, but he didn't. She followed him onto one of the old cars and looked around, but obeyed his instructions and didn't touch anything. She was soaking wet and shivering and was thankful for the towel he brought. She dried off her body as best she could and squeezed the water from her hair. She then wrapped her towel around her shoulders. When he went on to tell her he had been going to get something to eat when he found her she felt a wave of guilt come over her. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the only thing she had...a candy bar.

"It's all I have to offer...you can have it. Its...it's the least I can do..." she said as she looked away from him. She was clearly still embarrassed about everything.

The car they were in functioned more as a living room. The sliding doors just permanently kept open and the chairs wrenched out of their placements replaced with a large well worn sofa. They were filled with little knick knacks with various things that could help with repairs. Each little item a treasure in Andrew's eyes and something worth protecting. So he trusted Kylie not to actually betray that trust whenever he turned his back to her.

It was his own turf so he grew a bit more relaxed confident that he had gotten her plenty confused in the tunnels. He was going to see about scrounging something up for her to wear when she offered up a candy bar. Now that was a rare sight, "N-no i didnt mean it like that." Andrew said rather touched that she would offer up such a luxury item. "um..lets..here i'll go get you something to change into and ill see what i can find around here. I might have a can of soup or somethin." Andrew said stepping past her.

He highly doubted he had anything feminine for her to wear. But a t shirt and sweatpants were dry and would do in a pinch. He came out soon after with a bundle of clothes, "Here, not sure what's in there but you might get lucky. The car two back is pretty empty we used it for..." He stopped realizing he said we. He shook off his thoughts of Mason. "Just storage in there, um everything should be clean." Andrew said holding the clothes up for her.

Kylie was surprised when Andrew didn't take the candy bar from her. Kylie had a sweet tooth (chocolate in particular), but rarely could afford a candy bar. She had been saving up for one for a while and had bought it as a treat earlier that day. She nodded and carefully put the candy bar away, deciding to keep it for later and share it with him. The towel had helped somewhat, but she was still shivering. However, she slowly realized that she could no longer hear the thunder. That was a welcome relief, but she felt embarrassed that Andrew was going out of his way for her. After all, they weren't exactly friends.

She waited for him to return and was relieved to see dry clothes. She didn't care what they were at this point. They were dry and that was all that mattered. She graciously accepted them and glanced back at the empty car he was indicating when she noticed he use the word "we". However, he stopped short and looking at him, Kylie could see he was momentarily struggling with his emotions. She wanted to question him, but did not want to intrude on his privacy. She nodded and accepted the clothes and headed back to the storage car. All of her clothes were wet and so she ended up taking everything off. There wasn't an easy way of doing it without possibly being seen since there were windows everywhere. She put on the shirt and sweatpants, leaving her other clothes to dry out. It was going to take sometime and she hoped Andrew wouldn't mind her staying there for a while. She finally walked back and looked at him for a moment before speaking.

"Thank you...for everything."

Andrew was sorting out his feelings trying to figure out why Kylie ewas willing to give up a candy bar of all things. He knew to anyone else it was just a small little thing, barely worthy of a thought, but for them scrounging enough money to purchase a candy bar was a big deal. It was hardly worth attempting to steal such a thing too. Looking up he could still hear the distant rain and was somewhat glad that thunder couldn't reach them down here. The distant sound of the subway cars rumbling through the trains was easier to pick out than some storm.

As Kylie went to the storage room Andrew walked further into the living car and opened up the makeshift pantry. Seeing the sparse items of food he made a note to remind himself to go scrounging, or attempt to sneak into a place again. Spotting a can of chicken noodle soup he grabbed that finding it appropriate. He opend up the can and placed it directly onto a portable burner. FInally realizing his own clothing was a bit wet he began to disrobe tossing the wet jacket into a nearby hamper before pulling off his pants.

As he walked back to hte sofa and grabbed up a pair of shorts his eyes looked up and he spotted Kylie in mid dress. He had forgotten to tell her of hte privacy curtain at the doors and immediately looked away focusing on getting the soup warmed up for them. Hearing her footsteps he straightened up pushing past images of what he saw of her. She wasn't the first girl he'd seen nude but she was the first that he had a fight with earlier.

"It's no big thing..dont take it like we're cool or anything. Once this is all settled it's back to the way things were." Andrew said though his heart wasn't really in it. It was hard to stay mad at someone once you shared a meal. More of Mason's wisdom he thought. "um..just cooking up some soup help warm us up ya know?" Andrew asked walking back over to hte burner. The radio continued to play some soft jazz, a style that he wasn't fond of but it reminded him of Mason.

"Sorry, feel free to change the station to whatever. I'm just used to that one for background noise." He said stirring the soup in the can. Andrew looked over to Kylie after a moment, "So did you just get caught out there or somethin? with your fear of storms i'd figure you'd stay hold up the whole day or somethin." Andrew said.

Kylie was a bit taken aback by Andrew's statement that once this was all done it would be back to the way things had been between them. She felt her heart almost sink a little. This was the most company she had had in a long time and it only made her realize just how lonely she was. She had no friends or companions. Everyone avoided her. It made her feel like a bigger freak than she already was. She tried to hide the visibly hurt look in her eyes by nodding and looking away momentarily. She looked back at him when he mentioned he was making soup. With the weather as it was it sounded wonderful. She didn't care what it was as long as it was hot.

"I wasn't paying attention and it snuck up on me," she said with an embarrassed blush to her cheeks. She looked back at the radio and walked over to it. She lightly ran her fingers over it, but didn't change the station. "I can't believe you have a radio. I...I don't have a radio..." She looked around again. "I don't have any of this."

Andrew wasn't fond of change and having a rivalry with Kylie now was the only thing that was constant and familiar to him. This whole evening was just terrifying to him. He wasn't aware of how much that hurt Kylie he was only assuming she felt the same way. His rivalry with Kylie was pretty much his only drive in the world. He did notice she looked away rather quickly though.

"Not tryin to get at ya, i've lost track of time and stuff like that before." Andrew said hoping she wasn't too embarrased. Seeing the broth bubble he carefully picked it up with an oven mitt and carried it over to the sofa. He used his foot and pushed over an old cooler in front of it and placed it down. "I'll get us some spoons." Andrew said as he walked back. When Kylie spoke up of everything taht he had he looked back at her. He took a moment and looked around. Looking at him she could see a familiar look of lonliness. "I uh..i didnt find this place. I was brought here by a man who raised me up." Andrew said.

He opened a drawer and tried to find similar small spoons so they could take turns getting at the soup. "I've always lived here." Andrew said handing her a spoon. He took a seat on the ground letting Kylie sit on the sofa. She was his guest after all

Kylie took a seat on the couch and accepted the spoon that Andrew offered her. "Well, it seems like paradise compared with the hell hole I was raised in." She was quiet a moment as she worked up the courage to tell Andrew the truth. "The reason I am terrified of storms is because as punishment for dropping a glass when I was five or six my father made me stay outside all night during a horrific thunderstorm...that is after he beat me senseless."

Andrew looked to Kylie when she admitted she had been abused. One of htre reason he wanted to avoid foster care, he had heard horror stories and read the news. He leaned up and took a spoonful of soup and carefully sipped it. He wasn't sure what to say about that but he knew he had to say something. "I'm sorry. I'm serious when i said i wasn't trying to get at you about it." He said.

"so is that why you're on the street? To get out of the house?" sounded like the streets were a safer bet for her.

"The streets were always safer for me," Kylie admitted. "Beating the shit out of me was one of the nicer things he did to me," she said, hinting at sexual abuse without out right saying it. She wasn't sure why she was telling Andrew all of this. She hadn't told anyone about this, but she slowly began to realize that maybe she had needed to. She slowly dipped her spoon into the soup and carefully sipped it. That gave her a minute to consider what to say next. "I had to flee the house after my powers suddenly emerged in a powerful energy surge. I'm still not sure if my father was dead or alive when I left."

Andrew raised an eyebrow when Kylie went on. Given their circumstances he was surprised that she was willing to open herself up like this. He took another spoonful of sip hearing her out. All things considered Andrew felt that he had won the frigging lottery. He knew he didnt like her father that much and he heoped that he died painfully.

"You definately had it harder than i did. All i can remember is Mason..never knew my parents. He told me he found me at some bus stop one evening." Andrew said looking to Kylie. He looked to the radio as the dj came back on advising the thunderstorm warning had just been issued. After heraing Kylie's story he woudln't be able to send her on her way. Listening to the dj a bit more the music began to play and he looked to Kylie.

"Um..listen. i'm not going to like kick you out or anything. Besides those clothes will take forever to dry down here even with a fire going. You can sleep on the sofa tonight..we'll..call this a truce or something for now." Andrew said making an effort despite his reluctance. Every part of him was telling him not to trust her so openly but he couldn't just kick her out into the rain.

Kylie kicked herself for having just completely opened herself up to Andrew, but unlike him, she hadn't had anyone to talk to. She wondered if she was going to regret having told him all of this one day, but for now she didn't care. It was just nice having someone understand her and not judge her. Kylie listened as Andrew reciprocated her vulnerability by talking about Mason. She wanted to ask him more about him, but before she could do so the dj came on the radio and announced the thunderstorm warning. Kylie looked away from Andrew as she wondered what he was going to do or say. This was his home after all and she couldn't just expect him to be fine with letting her stay. However, she was visibly relieved when he told her he wasn't going to kick her out. She had a safe, dry place to stay for the night. Looking at him, she could see this wasn't an easy decision for him and to be honest she couldn't blame him. Had the tables been turned she would have been reluctant as well.

They finished eating the soup in relative silence. Kylie was thankful for a full stomach. Andrew truly had gone out of his way for her and he hadn't had to do any of this. He didn't owe her anything, but now she owed him greatly. As he cleaned up she pulled out the candy bar and opened it up. When he came back he would find she had broken it in half and she offered one half to him. She even smiled at him a little.

"I promise I didn't poison it."

Re: The Truce--A Flashback

After finishing up he took up the can and did his best to clean it out with some water from a bottle. Not much for indoor plumbing in the cars themselves but there was a nearby bathroom that still functioned miraculously. Showers were another issue but there was a YMCA not too far from where they were for that. As he cleaned up he tghought of why he was talking to Kylie and it dawned on him that he hadnt had anyone to talk too in some time. His evenings were spent just listening to that radio and sleeping. He thought of why he was even near Kylie's territory earlier.

Looking back towards where he left her he began to wonder if he was subconsciously trying to stay close by. Afterall she was something familiar. Trying to think of something they could do for the rest of the evening he realized how little his life had in entertainment. And if he felt that way he felt even worse for Kylie. He walked back to start up a conversation with her on what to do for the gvening when she offered him the piece of candy.

That was rather touching and he looked to her and truly believed her when she said didn't poison it. He gave a smirk knowing it was a joke and he took a seat on the ground accepting the piece. "Thanks." He said grateful. Chocolate was a rarity and she was offering him a piece. "It's very nice of ya to share." He said taking a bite. He took a moment to savor it knowing this was a rare treat.

As he sat and chewed he thought of their situation. Whenever he went scrounging he weas small enough to get into most places but he knew that wouldn't always be the case. He needed to secure more canned food in a way that wouldn't draw unwanted attention. Without Mason he was risking a lot with his break ins. "So..since we have this truce going i was wondering if you would be willing to help me with something." he said knowing of a warehouse nearby

Re: The Truce--A Flashback

Kylie was rather enjoying the evening. She felt safe down here and knew in her heart that something had changed between Andrew and herself. Would they really be able to go back to the way things were after this? When she had first gone out on her own she had thought that she needed no one, but tonight had changed that view. Perhaps, even if they couldn't be friends, she and Andrew could help one another out if and when it was needed. It was this thought that was in her head when Andrew asked her if she would be willing to help him out with something.

"Well, you helped me out tonight so sure I will help you. What do you need help with?"

Andrew wouldn't admit it aloud but it was nice to have someone around at home. He was grateful for the sounds the tunnels gave, it beat the silence, but it wasn't a replacement for another person. he wasn't at the point where he thought of asking her to join up with him though. But he needed another pair of eyes. "well i'm not s ure if you saw the pantry but im running low on some supplies. Normally i manage to go out and find like a can or two but theres this packing facility nearby." He began.

"I've got an in with one of the guards Chad, the better one if im honest, but i need an extra pair of hands and eyes. THeres this one door that has to be kept open, if it closes its locked. I can pick the lock from the outside but the inside is a different manner." He said. He remembered sneaking in once and having to seclude himself for an entire day behind some boxes on the racks. "I figure we'd split the haul 50/50." He said not wanting to be greedy

Kylie listened to Andrew as he explained what he wanted to do. It was strange for her to think of them working together, but clearly it would benefit them both in the end and she wasn't about to turn down a source of some food. Kylie never had enough food to keep a "pantry" like Andrew had. Getting food for her mainly involved soup kitchens and stealing...although in desperate times she would also dumpster dive.

"Ok. Where is this place?"

Andrew wasn't planning on attempting this tonight obviously so he realized it meant that she had to stick around. Or they'd have to meet up late at night which was always a risk. You'll have to keep her around for tomorrow he thought to himself as he realized what he offered. When Kylie asked about the location he hesitated for a moment before giving her the address. He only hesitated because it was a resource to steal from and here he was willing to give that up. We both will benefit he rationalized.

"Figure we'll hit it up tomorrow, dependin on weather." He said knowing the storm would still be going through. He looked to the sofa and a thought came to mind, "I should probably get you a blanket and a pillow." He said getting up.

Kylie understood why Andrew was hesitant to give her the address. When you had practically nothing, you wanted to keep important sources to yourself so that source wouldn't go dry. She had no intention of betraying Andrew's trust and she slowly nodded. After he got the pillow and blanket they found a pack of cards and decided to play a few games. At first, they were still rather tense and somewhat awkward around each other, both keeping their guard up still. But as the night went on they ended up telling funny stories as they played and their laughter echoed throughout the subway car. Life for both of them was shitty, but that night they were able to feel more like teenagers and have a little fun.
